Ring of Fire

celtic spirit ring of fire

I am struck by the Ring of Fire witnessed in the Southern hemisphere skies on what was summer solstice here in the North. I am struck by  how the circles of the sun and moon align to create it and how it appears to hold the sun’s energy as if in a crucible. Seen by internet, I nonetheless got a clear message that I, like the fire of the sun, was to stop, take notice, and deeply let the energy of the moment penetrate through my skin, connect with my innermost passions, and commit me to embracing the shift that has been put before us.

A few nights after solstice, I social distanced around a friend’s fire pit observing another ring of fire. This manufactured container also harnessed the fire and light to send a powerful message of the elements aligning and balancing the earth. I sat staring at the fire and thinking of our ancestors-what they had known, what meaning  a fire circle held for them, and what the legacy of wisdom they left us could do to mend a broken world.

We have Ring of Fire celebrations here in the Finger Lakes. Conesus Lake held their annual event over the July 4th weekend. Canandaigua Lake holds our event over Labor Day. Although the dates vary, the tradition is carried out in similar fashion. The hills and valleys offer differing vantage points to observe and absorb the beauty of the event. The flares along the shoreline create a glowing red ribbon edging the water and their reflection glimmers like a Native American Fire Dance. It is a wonderful experience I have enjoyed since childhood.

The Seneca nation of the Haudenosaunee created this ritual many ages ago. Even today, they gather on Bare Hill, above Canandaigua Lake, in ceremony and prayerful thanksgiving. When the huge bonfire atop the hill is lit, cottage owners and guests around the lake light the flames to symbolize unity, community and gratitude.

I invite you to have at least one Ring of Fire yourself this summer to reflect, celebrate and offer gratitude to the Sun, to Fire and to Passion for Beloved Community.
