The Lady Of Leprechauns
At the beginning of each month, I draw and comment upon a tarot card or an oracle card, suggesting we all think about its message throughout the month. I looked for a good leprechaun deck for us to use in March. I found none, so chose The Heart Of Faery Oracle Card Deck, by Brian and Wendy Froud, after all leprechauns are cousins of the fairies. As I prepared to pull a random card, this one caught my eye and I couldn’t bring myself to choose another. So,after months of following serendipity, I have actually selected this card willfully. I trust you will understand why I was drawn to it. The card is:
The Lady Of Leprechauns
The Lady Of Leprechauns: “Clear Sight, Foreknowledge, Faerie Gifts.”
I had never heard of a Lady who protects the Leprechauns before, but the idea is a delightful one. These wily, tricky beings are earth elementals, part of the world of fairy. The notion that they have a beautiful fairy protector seems fitting. We all have heard the stories of these tricksters getting into or causing trouble or using slight-of- hand or wordplay to slip out of trouble just in the nick of time. Although legend suggests they live way beyond the age of humans, they often are seen by humans as like small boys enjoying their pranks. Yet, we also know they carry insight and wisdom if you listened keenly.
In the words of the authors, “ If the Leprechauns are tricky, their Lady is even more so. She holds gifts of Faerie in both hands, gifts of knowledge of the future and of clear sight. The crystal ball represents knowledge of the Future.” But like the leprechauns she protects, her words may be filled with double meanings or multiple interpretation. We need to have our wits about us to benefit from her help. The messages she reveals may be as mysterious as the Oracle of Delphi. Buying in without consideration is fraught with danger.
Note in the picture how she is surrounded by many beings of the fairy world. Note that she holds a mask with a crystal horn of many facets. Note how she conveys that she is a force to be reckoned with despite her wreath of flowers and lovely long hair. She is more than she first appears and, in point of fact, she “may be no more than a glittering illusion.”
She reminds us that perspective and rightmindedness come from knowing ourselves and listening to our own best guidance. It is fine to ask to peer into the future, it is fine to take on the opinion of others, but in the end, it is our own clear-mindedness that is needed. Protection lies in listening to our heart of hearts, our soul.
During this merry month of March, in the month of March Madness and the itch to spring into spring, may we find clarity within… not be off with the fairies.
