Working With Energy+
When people I respected and learned from started talking about energy and energy work, I didn’t really understand what they meant. I “got” lightwork which I talked about in an earlier blog. However, the concept of energy alluded me. I could name and describe the chakras and I knew the concepts of having an etheric or energy body as kind of an aura around our physical body but that was as far as I could go. It took a trip to Ireland, to the ancient standing stones, to give me the experience of energy that allowed me to get a fuller picture.
Until recently, visitors could actually walk inside the Poulnabrone Dolmen. On the day of my first visit in 1980, some of our group sat inside and the others circled this awesome stone and meditated for Peace in Ireland. I trembled as I went inside the space created by these three huge boulders. The site had no context or meaning for me to produce such an effect; it “simply” was the energy of the place. The space literally created a vibration within me as we sat there. I almost never cry, but I was moved to tears by its power. Now every chance I get, I visit these ancient stones and allow myself to widen my experience of energy and the sense of dimensions beyond what I have known before.
A visit to a stone circle of the Isle of Man provided my first experience of feeling transported to an earlier time. I could sense how the Vikings had disturbed and rearranged the stones in the circle. I felt the violence of the time of the raid that later I read had indeed occurred at that site.
Some people have always had the awareness of the energy around them. Reiki practitioners and other healers work with energy by drawing Universal Source down through their bodies and directing it into the body of their clients. Like so many others, I have released so much and opened up to a greater sense of my body through Reiki work. Many of you know my book, Amidst the Stones, is based on an inspiration from a Reiki session that led to a past life exploration.
If the concept alludes you or you have friends who look at you skeptically when you speak about energy , have them try this quick and easy experiment: rub hands together rigorously, gently pull them apart about five inches, feel the energy created by those movements. Try it again and keep playing with it, seeing how far apart your hands can be while still feeling that unseen force created by the rubbing motion. When you do so, you are tapping into your energy field.
When I did workplace training, I facilitated an exercise where people in a circle, played with an imaginary ball. The person in possession of the ball could reshape and send to any one in the circle. This theater game illustrated how energy passes around a group, nonverbally. It was a powerful team building tool.
I find it intriguing and ironic that we are now beginning to see that the Ancient Ones understood and used energy in ways that are just coming into our awareness. You don’t have to visit ancient sites to open to this awareness. A walk in the woods, sitting in a garden or watching a sunset can do it.
In these troubled times, may we all open to the energy of the Universe and be guided in the realization that we are connected- to each other and to a Universal Source.
