A Ritual of Connecting to the the Land

Today, we continue the experiment of my sharing audio excerpts from Celtic Spirit. The tour leader, Dorrie, offers short prayers or rituals at each of the thin places or sacred sites the group visits. These are her words as the group gathers at the top of the hill at the Cliffs of Moher:

Chapter One, Cliffs of Moher,

When we all are gathered, Dorrie asks us to form a circle. She talks about the connection to the land that is at the heart of Irish culture and Celtic spirituality. She invites us to join her in a reimagining of what the Ancient Ones might have done to honor this beautiful island before us.

And then she begins in a firm, joyful voice that rises above the wind. “Ancient Ones of this Green Isle of Ireland, like the First Nations peoples of the Americas, and indigenous peoples throughout the world, you called to the Four Directions and asked the Spirits of the Sun and Moon, Sky, Earth and Water to join you in creating sacred circles.

“Here, at one of Ireland’s thin places, where the veil between worlds is lifted as we take in the energy and beauty around us, we, too, form a circle and honor these directions and these elements.

“Please turn with me to the East, source of the morning Sun, symbol of Spring, and of the East Wind, which here in Ireland is gentle and light. We ask the Spirits of the East to join us in our circle and on our journey.

“Turning to the South, source of the mid-day Sun, symbol of Summer, Fire, and of the South Wind, which here in Ireland is strong and warm. We ask the Spirits of the South to join us in our circle and on our journey.

“Turning to the West, source of the Sunset, symbol of Water, twilight, change, and of the West Wind, which here in Ireland is a hard and wayward wind. We ask the Spirits of the West to join us in our circle and on our journey.

“And, finally, we turn to the North, source of the Darkness of Night and Stars, symbol of the Earth on which we stand, and of the North Wind, which is the fierce bringer of the magic and power. We ask the Spirits of the North to join us in our circle and on our journey.

“Would you now turn in toward the Center, joining hands?” We join hands and draw to our circle the Spirit of That Which Is Greater Than Ourselves.

“We call that Power by many names and we gather for many reasons. But whatever our Beliefs and whatever the specifics of our Purpose:

May we open our senses to the beauty and wonder around us.

May we open our hearts to one another and all we meet.

May we open our minds to viewpoints and realms beyond our present knowing.

Thus, we ask to be Open to Spirit for our Highest Good.

We ask that our bus tour be blessed with good health, sunny skies, and right Relations.

Blessed Be and Amen
